HEATH: A funeral service for D. Robert Tharp, Age 75, of Heath will be held on Monday, March 25, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta Stickle Funeral Service with sons-in-law, Pastor Mike Wilson and Dave Mason, Minister officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens.

Robert went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio).

Born April 1, 1937 in Columbus, Ohio he was a son of the late George D. and Doris L. (Forshey) Tharp.

Mr. Tharp was a 1955 graduate of Westerville High School and a 1959 graduate of Otterbein College where he received a B.S. Degree in Education. He received a Master's Degree in Secondary School Administration from Ohio University in 1967. Robert served for 46 years in public schools in Licking County as a teacher, coach and principal. He enjoyed coaching Jr. High football, track and boy's and girl's basketball. Mr. Tharp retired in 1995 after serving twenty seven years as principal of Licking Valley Junior High School. Following his retirement, he worked nine years as an attendance officer for some 20 schools in Licking County.

A deep love for the Lord and His Word were the guiding principles and foundation for all that Robert did in life. He served for 36 years as a member, speaker and officer for the Licking County Camp of Gideon's International, where he had the privilege of speaking at over two hundred church services. Robert attended the Harrison Chapel Bible Methodist Church for 48 years, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher for many years. He served on the Board of Directors for the Licking County Aging Program, trustee for the Licking County Historical Society and was a member of the Katzenjammer Kids. Mr. Tharp was an avid local historian. He wrote numerous articles on Licking County history, and spoke to many local groups about area history. He assisted in writing a book entitled, "A Bicentennial History of Licking County, Ohio 1808-2008".

Robert was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He enjoyed attending the many activities and sporting events of his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid gardener for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Reta Kaye (Teets) Tharp, whom he married on August 8, 1964; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dave Mason of Heath; Denise and Mike Wilson of Mansfield; and Beth Tharp of Heath; grandchildren, Makenna Mason, Ethan, Delaney and Karlie Wilson; brother, Jim Tharp of Westerville; niece, Stephanie (Collins) Wolford of Columbus; great-nephews, Kyle and Trevor and great-niece, Addison.

Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, at the Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service, 1249 Hebron Rd., Heath.
