NEWARK: A funeral service for Gerald "Skip" Baumgartner, 75, of Newark, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, with Pastor Tim Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.

Skip, a retired firefighter, passed away February 23, 2014, at his residence. He was born November 23, 1938, in Newark, to the late Joseph and Esther (Inlow) Baumgartner.

Skip was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving from 1956-1960. He joined the Newark Fire Department in 1967, Union President of Local 109 from 1979-1996, member of the Mayor's Club in 1992, Firefighter of the Year in 1995, and retired in 1997, honored in November 2013 and named President Emeritus for Local 109, Firefighters AFL-CIO,CLC for 17 years of dedicated service as President of Local 109 Recognition Award.

He is survived by his wife, Neva L. (Shafer) Baumgartner; children, Christopher (Lana) Baumgartner of Newark, Tracy (Keith) Harris of Newark, Todd (Darcey) Baumgartner of Heath, and Wendy (Harlan) Parrett of Newark; step-children, Sonya (Glenn) Hampton and Joshua (Samantha) Watts both of Ashville; grandchildren, Lea Baumgartner, Patrick and Zachary Harris, Morgan, Amanda, Katie, and Joey Parrett all of Newark, Anastasia, Emma, Colton, and Hunter all of Ashville; great-grandchild, Huey Green; sisters, Janet (Monte) Nagy of Newark and Linda (Kenneth) Rhodes of Mt. Dora, FL; sister-in-law, Shirley Baumgartner of Newark, several nephews, nieces, his brotherhood of firefighters, and close friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph Jr., James, Jack, and Donald Baumgartner; sister, Rosemary Ratliff, and wives, Paula and Nita Baumgartner.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 985. 21st St. Newark, and on Friday from 12 to 1 p.m., one hour prior to the service.
