Gladys Massa

NEWARK: A Mass of Christian Burial for Gladys Massa, 89, of Newark will be at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Thursday, November 29, 2012, with Reverend JCP Sullivan, Parish Priest celebrating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery with military services provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.

Gladys died peacefully at the Inn at Sharonbrooke in Newark, Ohio where she resided since April of 2010. Gladys Massa was born February 9, 1923 in Bardstown, KY to Onie and Ivo (Ballard) Downs.

Gladys attended Nazareth School of Nursing, St Joseph infirmary in Louisville, Kentucky receiving her registered nursing certification in 1944. While visiting a fellow nurse in Dallas in April of 1945, Gladys heard FDR's call to service on the radio. She promptly returned to Kentucky to enlist in the Army with a commission of 2nd Lieutenant. Gladys completed basic training at Fort Knox gaining the additional 16 lbs required for enlistment. She was assigned to Nichols General Hospital in Louisville, KY to care for the returning wounded. There she met and cared for a young soldier, the love of her life, Capt. Paul L Massa, whom she married in the Hospital chapel on October 10, 1945. Upon separation from the US Army she was awarded the Victory Medal.

As a nurse she worked at Mercy Hospital in Mt Vernon, Ohio; Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark and for Dr Wm Allen Avery in Granville, Ohio. Gladys retired as Circulation Manager from Denison University in 1988 after fifteen years of service.

Gladys Massa was a remarkable woman. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother, a caring grandmother and trusted friend. Together she and Paul raised six children with love, dedication and faith. Throughout her life, Gladys displayed a strong and compassionate spirit whether caring for the wounded, enduring personal hardships or unselfishly fulfilling the needs of her loved ones. Her family could always look to her to be their source of strength.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Paul L Massa; and son, John Stephen Massa. Gladys is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Vince and Cindy Massa of Granville Ohio; Jim and Susan Massa of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and three daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Andy Anderson of Grand Junction, Colorado, Maureen Blackburn of Worthington Ohio; Theresa and Rick Marshall of Durango Colorado; 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Friends and family may call from 4-7 P.M., Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 P.M.
