NEWARK: A Funeral Mass for J. Thomas "Tom" Boehm, 79, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Thursday, May 23, 2013, with Fr. Bob Penhallurick as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Tom passed away at the Chestnut House on Sunday, May 19, 2013. He was born in Newark, Ohio on February 18, 1934 to the late Karl H. and Dorothy M. (Rhinehart) Boehm.
Tom was a United State Army Veteran where he served as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where he followed in his Dad's footsteps and served as an usher for many years. Tom was a 1952 graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School and then went on to earn his BA in Education from Muskingum College.
During his teaching career, Tom taught health and physical education within several school districts, including Chillicothe Bishop Flaget, Marian Catholic, Bishop Rosecrans Zanesville, and Meadowbrook Middle School.
In conjunction with his teaching, Tom also dedicated many years to coaching basketball and became affectionately known as "Coach" by many of his players and students. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach working with Walt Reid in the 50's and 60's at St. Francis de Sales and Newark Catholic High Schools. He coached the Bishop Rosecrans to the state semi-finals in 1979 and was inducted into the South Eastern Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association for over 30 years.
Tom is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Charles Dudley, and Charlene Boehm; sister-in-law, Dorothea Boehm, all of Newark; nieces and nephews, Timothy and Janet Boehm, John and Pamela Boehm, Barbara and Scott Boehm, and Janet and Jon Veley; longtime family friend, Mary Lou Calasso of Newark; and many former students and athletes.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Karl Boehm.
Friends and family may call from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday, Mary 22, 2013 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 P.M.
