POWELL: Joe L. Warren, 83, of Powell, passed away on Thursday December 27,2012 at The Laurels of Norworth in Worthington. Joe was born in Cordele, GA to James and Katherine Warren.

Joe has left his thumbprint on many honorable items of recognition. He retired in 1987 from Columbus Division of Fire. Joe designed and managed the construction of many of the Columbus Fire Stations. He also oversaw and managed the purchasing, design and maintenance of the city's engines, medics and squad units. He developed life-long friendships and would enjoy the camaraderie of going to the fire stations, especially stations 6 and 27 to play cards and bond with those special fire fighters. Prior to working for the Division of Fire, Joe worked as the grounds and maintenance supervisor for the Columbus Zoo. He was instrumental in bringing the original red and white train to the zoo and in fact drove the train on the highway from Springfield to the zoo. Joe designed and accomplished introducing the original paddle wheel boat to the zoo. The name Scioto Belle was given to his pride and joy. He created the Children's Petting Zoo and designed the Pachyderm building. Joe served as a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Air Force as a Technical Decoding Cryptographer and also taught underwater rescue. After retirement from the Division of Fire, Joe went on to receive two more degrees. He accomplished a Law and Education degree.

Joe was very stoic , intelligent and well respected man. He married the love of his life Lillian "Peachie" Santilli on November 12, 1952. Joe and Lillian Warren celebrated 60 years of marriage this past November.

Joe is survived by his wife Lillian "Peachie" Warren; daughter Judy(Jim) Lewis of Newark, OH; granddaughters Beth Ann (Bobby) Kieber, Kristen Lewis and Caitlin(Jesse) Estep; great-grandsons Bobby Kieber, Jr. and Lincoln Estep all of Newark, OH; brother Colonel John Warren of Alexandria, VA; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents James and Katherine Warren; brother James Warren; and beloved son Joe Warren II.

Visitation will be 4-7 PM Wednesday January 2, 2013 at RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL, 450 West Olentangy St, (Powell Rd./St. Rt. 750/ ¼ mile east of Sawmill Pkwy.) where the funeral service will be at 11 AM Thursday January 3, 2013. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery.
