John H. Cox, Sr.

NEWARK: A remembrance celebration for John Howard Cox, Sr., age 65, of Newark, will be held at 12:00 Noon on Sunday, October 7, at CFD Fireman's Park, 1300 Honeycreek Road, Buckeye Lake, Ohio, where military honors will be observed by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Private inurnment will take place on the family farm.

John passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born January 17, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Clarence C. and Delores (Van Meter) Cox.

John was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and faithfully served his country in two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal with combat V for heroism and the Presidential Unit Citation.

John joined the Columbus Fire Department in 1973 and retired in November 2000 after 27 years of service. He was a member of the IAFF Local 67, AMVETS Post 0051, the VFW and the Newark Eagles Post 537. His hobbies were his farm and his horses. John loved and respected his country and his military and firefighter brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne (Thompson) Cox; sons, John H. (Angie) Cox, Jr. of Lancaster and Clint C. (Tami) Cox of Granville; daughter, Suzanne (Mike) Peters of Thornville; grandchildren, Mackenzie, Kaysee and Brady Watters, Brandon Peters, Jaime, Bailee, Chloe, Nikki, Katie and Kyle Cox and D'Kota Heysham; brothers, Gary (Liz) Cox of Newark and Dan (Diane) Cox of Johnstown; Goddaughter, Samantha Stickle of Pataskala; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorelei Keer and Ruth Ann Cox.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or the Licking County Humane Society.

The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark, is assisting the family with arrangements.
