NEWARK: A funeral service celebrating the life of Kenneth E. Bourne, age 88, of Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Msgr. Paul P. Enke as celebrant. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill where military honors will be provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Mr. Bourne passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Arlington Care Center. He was born November 25, 1925 in Newark to the late Harley Maine and Ruth (Van Atta) Bourne, Sr.
Kenny, a track and football athlete, left Newark High School at the age of 16 to join the Navy during WWII and served at Bunker Hill NAS, as well as on the USS Massey (Plank Owner) and USS Yorktown. He was a veteran of the Battle of Okinawa where his ship (Massey) performed lifeguard, radar picket duty and acted as fighter director to cover the invasion, splashing 9 kamikazes while under nearly constant assault. Her Captain received the Navy Cross for her action and the ship and crew a Presidential Unit Citation and 2 Pacific Theater Battle Stars for this and subsequent action. After returning from the war he married Freda Louise (Watson) having known each other for just a short time, they spent the next 38 years together. She passed February 9, 1984. Kenneth retired from Kaiser Aluminum after 42 years of service as a maintenance mechanic. Prior to that he worked in every department in the plant including management and was the Chief Union Steward when he retired. While working fulltime at Kaiser, he also worked as a professional painter. He always held two jobs, being dedicated to his family. He enjoyed working on cars and restoring houses, woodcarving, hunting, fishing, camping, boating and could repair just about anything.
He is survived by his fiancé, Marian Johnson; his two children, Patricia Kay "Pat" (Dennis) Badgerow of Groveport and Kelly Edmund (Nancy) Bourne of Newark; four grandchildren, Luke Badgerow of Cincinnati, Sarah (Günther) Tielemans of Manhattan, NY, Kevin, (Kent State University) and Jenna Bourne (Newark Catholic) of Newark; a great-grandson, Oberon Tielemans; numerous nieces and nephews, and his parrot, Grumpy.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Lee Bourne (1997); infant sister, Betty Bourne; and a brother, Harley Bourne, Jr.
Friends may call on Monday, July 14, from 5-7 p.m. at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark.
