Newark: A Mass of Christian Burial for Robert J. Bishop, 80, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Thursday, January 12, 2012, with Fr. Jonathan Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Newark.
Mr. Bishop, a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, died at his home on Sunday, January 8, 2012. He was born in New Washington, Ohio on December 14, 1931 to the late Ernest J. and Bertha R. (Fisher) Bishop.
Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War from 1950-1954, spending 2 years in Okinawa.
Bob worked an additional 32 years in government service, including many years at the Newark Air Force Base, retiring in January 1987. Following retirement, Bob delivered meals for the Licking County Aging Program and then worked part time in the mailroom for 20 years at Park National Bank. Bob also was an avid mall walker.
Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gaylene (Cline) Bishop, of the home; his children and their spouses, Linda and Joe George of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Laura and Ed Lewis of Granville, and Steve and Lisa Bishop of Granville; his grandchildren; Chris (Katherine) George, Alex George, Matthew Lewis, Michael Lewis, Jamie Lewis, Andy Lewis, Jacob Bishop, and Nicholas Bishop; his great-granddaughter, Sophie George; his sister, Mary Berger of Huron; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Sara Bishop, Joanne and Arthur Burger, and Robert Berger.
Friends and family may call from 4-7 P.M. Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, where a Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 P.M..
