NEWARK: Funeral services for Robert Bernard Walters, 91, of Newark, will be Thursday, April 19, 2012, at 11AM, at the Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home with Pastor Wes Humble officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville, where military honors will be observed.
Robert was the first of two sons born to the late Charles and Gladys (Smoke) Walters. He was a 1942 graduate of Jacksontown High School, Jacksontown, Ohio.
He served in the 582nd Signal Depot Company of the U.S. Army during WWII as a T/4 Tech Sergeant. He was involved in the invasion of Normandy, the battle of Northern France, and the Rhineland. He received the following citations: Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, American Theatre Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Award with three bronze stars, the Victory Medal and Jubilee of Liberty Medal given by the French government for the invasion of Normandy.
He was a 50-year member of Hebron Lodge #116 F.&A.M., a member of the Newark American Legion Post 85, a former member of Harbor Hills Country Club, the U.S. Trotting Association, and the Ohio Harness Horsemen's Association. After retiring from the B&O Railway, he was involved with standard bred racing.
He was an avid sports fan especially the Newark Wildcats for over 70 years and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a member of the NHS Rebounders, Quarterback, Diamond, and Booster Clubs.
He is survived by his wife Lauretta of 68 years, sons and daughters-in-law, Gary (Vicci) of Newark, Ronald (Marianne) of Upper Arlington, Thomas (Susan) of Cincinnati, and Dan (Marjeanne) of Newark. One brother, Charles "Pete" (Barbara) Walters of Newark. He also had 10 grandchildren, Kyle (Jessica) Walters, Kimberly (Steve) Peck, Heather (Ion) Jones, Tricia (Chris) Sakles, Grant (Jamie) Walters, Courtney (Brandon) Biniker, Emily (Peter) Norton, Vincent (Amy) Walters, Brittany Walters, and Casey (Matt) Hardy. One step granddaughter, Kristin Vonnes. Also 10 great granchildren, Carson and Caroline Peck, Sophia and Gabriella Walters, Jake and Reid Biniker, Presley Hardy, Oliver Norton, and Samson and Shepherd Sakles. He was especially proud that all of his children and grandchildren are college graduates.
The Walters family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff of Hospice of Central Ohio and to a special caregiver, Sidney Fouty.
Calling hours will be held from 2-4PM and 6-8PM Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st Street, Newark, Ohio. A Masonic Service will held at 5:45PM, Wednesday, at the funeral home.
