HEATH: A funeral service for Virginia Ann (Matz) Appel, 76, of Heath, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, with Pastor Tom Myers officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens.
Virginia passed away unexpectedly, Monday, August 27, 2012, at Licking Memorial Hospital. She was born November 8, 1935, in Utica, to the late John and Frances (Matern) Matz.
She graduated from Newark High School in 1953 and married Carl F. Appel that same year. They lived in Texas while Carl served in the U.S. Air Force. Later Virginia joined the Payroll Department of the Newark Board of Education, retiring in 1999 with 22 years of service.
Before Carl's illness, he and Virginia traveled extensively, visiting many foreign countries, and throughout the United States. She was an active member of the Neal Avenue Church Quilters group.
Virginia is survived by two sons, David (Baiba) Appel of Las Vegas, NV and Steven (Crystal) Appel of Colorado Springs, CO; two cherished grandsons, Miles and Matisse Appel both of LasVegas; brother, Rudy, of San Diego, CA; sister, Betty (Frank) Logan of Newark, along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carl F. Appel, Jr., who died in December 2010; two brothers, Otto and Robert Matz and sister, Frieda Valenti.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark.
