William (Bill) Henry Deardurff

TOLEDO: William (Bill) Henry Deardurff age 96 of Toledo, Ohio died March 4, 2013 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Bill was born July 25, 1916 in Newark, Ohio to William and Christine Schneider Deardurff.

He retired from Owens Corning Fiberglass Corporation in July 1981 as a Corporate Purchasing Manager. He started in production at the Newark, Ohio Plant in 1936, was an operator on the first Fiberglas wool production line, also became a Quality Control Inspector, a Warehouse and Shipping Supervisor, Plant Sales Branch Contact, and a buyer in the Newark Purchasing Department. He was transferred to Toledo Purchasing in 1955.

He graduated from Newark St Frances de Sales High School and received his Business education from the University of Chicago and Purchasing Management from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Bill enlisted in the US Navy in July, 1942 and served for 39 months. He became a ships Navigator and Signalman aboard Sub Chaser 1272. He earned 2 Bronze Stars for participation in the landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was a founding member of St Patrick of Heatherdowns Church, a member of the American Legion Toledo Post #335, a life member of Newark, Ohio Elks Lodge 391, a former director and past President of the Toledo Purchasing Management Association. He was a member of the Ohio Tool Collectors Association and the Fiberglas 201 Retirees Group. His hobbies were woodworking, photography, and golf.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Martha (Jean) Wintermute Deardurff; son William (Nick) Deardurff of Maumee and Put-in-Bay, OH; daughters Diane Weed of Charleston, SC and Holly (Ron) Gralak of Sandy, UT; and grandchildren Carly (Marc) Wennogle of Golden, CO and Tradd and Alex Gralak of Salt Lake City, UT.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters Rita Jane Diebold and Martha Dawson; and a brother Bernard all of Newark, OH.

Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Friday, March 8, 2013, from 2:00-8:00 PM. A prayer vigil will be held at 7 PM. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:30 AM, in the mortuary, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM at St Patrick of Heatherdowns Church, 4201 Heatherdowns Blvd. A prayer service will be held at St Frances de Sales Church in Newark, OH on Monday, March 11 at 10:30 AM with burial in St Joseph Cemetery, Newark, OH.

Donations can be made to St Patrick of Heatherdowns Church, the Toledo Post #335 American Legion Memorial Fund, and Hospice of Northwest Ohio or to the donor's choice.
