William P. Callis

NEWARK: A funeral service for William P. Callis, 83, of Newark will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Newark Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be provided by the Licking County Veteran's Alliance.

Mr. Callis passed away on February 23, 2014 at his residence. He was born on March 8, 1930 to the late William R. and Hazel (Vessels) Callis in Indianapolis, IN.

Bill proudly served in the U.S. Navy; and as a Seabee, helped build an airport in the Phillipines. He graduated from General Motors Institute in Flint, MI as a mechanical engineer and was a certified professional engineer in the State of Ohio. Bill retired from Newark Air Force Base and served as Adjutant of Heath American Legion Post #771 for 33 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kathleen; grandchildren, Amber (Charlie) Smith, Jenesa Callis, Jill Birtcher, Spencer Watring and Jamie Callis of Newark, Heather Callis and Marcy Birtcher of Columbus, Jesse Callis of Buckeye Lake, Kathy Jo (Tom) Rose of Urbana and Matthew (Misty) Callis of Piqua; niece, Rev. Arleen (Ben) Modglin of Taveres, FL; and 24 great-grandchildren. Also survived by family friend, Kathy Birtcher of Columbus.

Family was his first love, with friends a close second, and golf very close to that.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alice Taylor; sons, David L. Callis, Jerry L. Callis and Ronald L. Callis; daughter, Cynthia L. Watring; grandson Shawn Watring; and granddaughter, Kim Birtcher of Newark.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark, OH.
