Virginia Reed Goodman

NEWARK: Virginia Reed Goodman, 70, passed away February 23 2014 at Flint Ridge Nursing Home after a brief illness. She was born in Canton, Ohio on June 20, 1943 to Ralph Henry Reed and Margaret Louise (Treiber) Reed. Virginia, better known as Ginni, graduated from Redford High School in Detriot Michigan. Ginni then earned a B.A. in Education from the University of Michigan in 1965 and taught Head Start and third grade in Holland Michigan. In 1967, Ginni graduated with an M.A. from the University of Michigan in Guidance and Counseling and became a Guidance Counselor at Oberlin High School in Oberlin, Ohio. At Oberlin, she met and became friends with the Paul Nabors, the high school principal. Mr. Nabors became principal at Newark High School, where there was an opening in the Guidance Department, and he invited Ginni to apply for the position. Ginni became a Guidance Counselor at Newark High School and then Chair of the Guidance Department. On June 22, 1981 she married James Erwin Goodman, the love of her life. After James' death in 1983, she taught 3rd grade at Miller Elementary, and then became a Guidance Counselor at Miller and Lincoln Middle School until she retired. Ginni was a dedicated educator, wife, and daughter. She was a Presbyterian and a member of the DAR.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by her aunt, Frances Pattarini, brothers Clark (Lynn) Reed and Craig (Jill) Reed, DVM, her sister Rebecca (Robert) Hill, nephews Andrew Hill, David Hill, Scott Reed, Seth Reed, and nieces Tracy Colling, Emily Reed and Abigail Reed.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Newark on March 8th at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Carey Hovland Mtui, one of Ginni's former students.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution can be made to the Newark High School Call to College, 314 Granville St., Newark, OH 43055.
