NEWARK: Funeral services for Donald "Deke" W. Jones, 82, of Newark, will be held at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 19, 2014 with Rev. Fr. Robert Willmann officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Newark, with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Don, a 1949 Newark High School graduate, died at Licking Memorial Hospital on Friday, April 11, 2014. He was born in Newark, Ohio on April 29, 1931 to the late Donald and Anna (Floyd) Jones.
Don, a United States Navy Korean War Veteran, was retired from the Newark Post Office where he worked as a letter carrier for over 30 years until his retirement in 1986. Following retirement, Don looked for a part-time job to occupy his time. Instead, Don went to work full time in the maintenance department at St. Francis de Sales School, eventually retiring in 1993.
Over the years Don was very active with Newark Catholic High School athletics and served as an assistant Varsity football coach, was the first freshman football head coach, and was instrumental in starting the junior high track & field program.
He was a member of the National Letter Carriers #281, Coast Guard Auxiliary, past-president of St. Vincent DePaul Society, and served on the Board of Catholic Social Services and the Food Pantry Network.
He is survived by his wife, Linda (Grant) Jones, of the home; his sons, Brian W. Jones of Newark, and David A. Jones of Columbus; his daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth A. Jones of St. Louisville, Karen L. Jones of Newark, Maureen P. and Jeff Stowell of Germantown, Wisconsin, and Buffy and Benjamin Carter of Wheelersburg; ten grandchildren, Zachary Jones, Ryan Jones, Katie Jones, Tyler Stowell, Trenton Stowell, Joshua Jones, Callie Marie Hale, Alexis Lynn Hale, and Abigail Lynn Carter; two great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Karyssa Jones; his mother-in-law, Nellie Grant; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia (Parmelee) Jones; his grandson, Andrew Jones; son, Toby James "T.J." Hale; and his brother, James R. "Dick" Floyd.
Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 4-7 P.M. on Friday, April 18, 2014.
