NEWARK: A funeral service celebrating the life of Virgil Dwight Shaw, age 87, of Newark, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 23, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service with Pastor Sam Harnish officiating. Burial will follow at Brushy Fork Cemetery.
Mr. Shaw passed away May 19, 2014 at Flintridge Nursing Home. Mr. Shaw was born November 15, 1926 in Madison Township to the late Harold Merrel and Ollie (Mason) Shaw.
He graduated from Newark High School with the class of 1944. Dwight retired from Rockwell after 35 years of employment. After retirement he met regularly with the Tuesday lunch bunch at the Mall. He was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities. He was a coach in the church softball league and Biddy Basketball and leader of the 4-H Foresters. Dwight was a 65-year member of ACME Lodge #554 F & AM; a longtime-fan of the Cleveland Indians, Ohio State basketball and Newark High School sports. He enjoyed doing family research and was a member of Licking County Genealogical Society. Dwight loved to travel, especially to the National Parks of our beautiful nation. He made many wonderful friends while doing Western style square dancing with the Bloomin' Buckeyes and the Motivators.
Dwight is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annabelle (Hopkins) Shaw; two children, Mark (Debbie) Shaw and Sally Shaw; two granddaughters, Sarah (Kyle) Iler and Rachel (Robb Lassiter) Shaw; six great-grandchildren, Madisyn, Logun, Liberty, Blake, Sarayah and Elyanna; nieces and nephews, Connie (Dave) Deckman of Olean, NY, Karen (Bill) Taylor, Scott Shaw, Ron Shaw, all of Texas; their families, niece Jennifer Paul of Gahanna; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jenny and Bernie Berlinski, Lynn Hopkins, Donna and Chuck Day, Dave and Donna Hopkins, Sonnie and Peggy Duke, Rose and Mack Richcreek, Trudy Simpson and their families and many cousins.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale, Gene and Keith Shaw, niece, Sandra Paul, nephew, Curtis Deckman; and brother-in-law, Joe Hopkins.
Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark. A Masonic Service will take place at 5:45 p.m.
