Hazel Benita McAllister

REYNOLDSBURG: A memorial service for Hazel Benita McAllister, age 96, will be held on Saturday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m. in Kimes Chapel at Wesley Ridge Retirement Community, Reynoldsburg. Mrs. McAllister passed away May 21, 2014 at Wesley Ridge. She was born March 7, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Francis Winton and Laura Thomasina (Gabrielsen) Adison.

Mrs. McAllister graduated from Carl Schurz High School in Chicago. Prior to her marriage to her late husband, Rev. Carl Eugene McAllister on March 22, 1942, she was employed by Underwriter's Laboratories in Chicago. Besides raising three children, Hazel was actively involved with her husband's pastorates in Janesville, Wisc., Whitefish Bay, Wisc., Lewiston, Maine and Newark, Ohio, where he served as Pastor of First Baptist Church. While residing in Newark, Hazel worked as a music librarian at Denison University from 1965-1986.

Throughout her life, Hazel had a continuing interest in the arts, expressed through her music, painting, and love of reading and writing. She shared her musical talents as a soloist and church choir director. She was a member of the Granville Music Club. Hazel belonged to a poetry group and spent years as a volunteer with the Literacy Council helping others learn to read and write. At Wesley Ridge Retirement Community, she was a founding member of the Writers' Group. Her interest in people and places near and far was evident in her involvement in the "Newarks of the World" program and in her travels all over the world with her husband, Carl. After a trip to China, Hazel worked as a docent for the Son of Heaven Exhibition in Columbus. She and Carl were parents to an exchange student and welcomed many visitors from around the world into their home.

She is survived by her children, Grant A. (Ann) McAllister of Marion, Erin G. Newman of Columbus and Scott W. (Wendy) McAllister of Erie, Colorado; three grandsons, Benjamin (Ashley), Brett (Jessie), Cody (Ashley) and Skyler McAllister; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Harper; a brother, Karsten "Bud" Adison of Reynoldsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Carl Eugene McAllister in 2009; sister, Dorothy Adison; grandson, Charles McAllister Tully; two sons-in-law, Randolph H. Tully and Eugene F. Newman.
