NEWARK: A funeral service celebrating the life of Jack E. Porter will be held at 6pm, on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home in Newark. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4-6pm, on Thursday, at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st Street.

Mr. Porter, age 84, of Newark, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014, at the Arlington Care Center in Newark. He was born February 23, 1930, in Newark, son of the late John C. and Eunice (Carney) Porter. Mr. Porter retired from the Ohio Power Company (AEP) after 45 years service. He loved the outdoors and had been a member The Poseidon Scuba Diving Club and enjoyed target shooting and snow skiing.

Mr. Porter especially enjoyed boating, traveling across the United States with his boat and had been a member of the Newark Boating Club. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, sang in church choir for many years and enjoyed playing the banjo. He and his wife visited many area nursing homes bringing music to the residents and was known to many as "Banjo Jack". For many years he sang with the gospel quartet, the "CE Harmonairs". He was also a member of Acme Lodge F.&A.M.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth "Betty" (Cochran) Porter, whom he married June 17, 1950; two daughters, Debra (the late Tim) Stevens of Newark, Dana (Scott) Burgner of Columbus; two grandchildren, Spencer Stevens and Reid Stevens; his sister Jane (John) Miller of Newark and longtime close friend Bill (Alice) McBride.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church, 10 N. Cedar Street; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
