ASHLAND: Richard M. "Dick" Harman, 81, passed away July 19, 2014 at Kingston of Ashland after an extended illness.
Dick was born at Seneca Caverns in Riverton, WV on September 21, 1932 to Burrel and Alice Glancy Harman.
He attended Newark High School in 1948 where he played varsity basketball under Coach Mack Douglas, who referred to him as "Mansfield's Gift To Newark." Then he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he earned his high school diploma and became a sonar operator. After serving two years in the Korean War, Dick returned to Mansfield and earned his barber degree in Columbus, Ohio following in the footsteps of his brother-in-law who owned Dick's Barber Shop off the square in Newark.
It was on a train headed to a Mansfield Senior-Massillon football game, that Dick met Beverly M. Hunt and later married her on November 5, 1955. He owned and operated Dick's Barber Shop for 45 years on Lexington Avenue in Mansfield where he retired from in December of 1996.
Some of his favorite past times were mushroom hunting with his lifelong friend, Larry, attending his granddaughter Erica's basketball and softball games, and hitting one of the many area golf courses with his golfing buddy, Ed. He and his family enjoyed many years vacationing in Myrtle Beach, SC.
He leaves behind his daughter, Janet K. Kick and granddaughter, Erica A. Kick, both of Mansfield; son, David R. (Lisa) Harman of Mansfield; sister, June Harman Betts of Newark, OH; brothers, Cecil (Joann) Harman of Zephyrhills, FL, Fred (Corky) Harman of Streetsboro, OH and William (Linda) Harman of Sterling, VA; brothers-in-law, Jim Hunt and Stan (Joyce) Hunt; and nieces Sharlyn (Charles) Brown of Westerville, Janice (Michael) Large of Newark and nephew Ric Betz of New Albany, Michael (Pam) Harman of Concord, and Chris (Selene) Harman of North Carolina, and numerous other nieces and nephews throughout the U.S.A.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Beverly Harman as well as his mother, and step-father, Alice (William) Heltzel; and father and step-mother, Burrel (Polly) Harman.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, July 28, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Paul Larson. An additional hour of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. Military graveside services will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
