FREDERICKTOWN: Richard L. Spence, age 76, of Fredericktown, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at the Knox Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 23, 1938 in Newark, Ohio to the late Paul and Margaret (Bauman) Spence.
Dick graduated from Newark High School in 1956 then worked at Cooper Bessemer/Rolls-Royce for 50 years starting as a machinist apprentice working his way to plant manager. Dick was a member of the Fredericktown United Methodist Church. He was a 43 year member of the Thrall Lodge #170 F. & A.M., Baldwin Shrine Club of Mount Vernon, Old Homestead Club and Fraternal Order of Elks #140. Dick served in multiple capacities on the Board of Directors of the CES Credit Union from 1984 to present. When Dick wasn't home he could be found at his second home, Irish Hills Golf Course. He loved golfing, fishing, but most of all he loved to spend time with his family.
Dick is survived by his wife of 55 years, Suzanne (Humes) Spence; sons, Dr. Bradlee (Alice) Spence and Eric (Melanie) Spence; daughters, Mary (Ken) Goble and Annette (Tony Cline) Dooley; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Jeffrey (Patti) Spence; two sisters, Nancy (Craig) Peck and Mary (William) Thompson; many nieces and nephews and a wealth of friends.
Besides his parents, Dick is preceded in death by a son-in-law, Larry Dooley.
Friends may call on Friday, August 29, 2014 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Fredericktown United Methodist Church, 123 Columbus Road, Fredericktown, Ohio where a masonic service will begin at 6 p.m. A Celebration of Life service honoring Dick will follow the masonic service. Rev. Dr. Keith Bohley will be officiating.
