HEATH: A funeral service for Marvin "Taxi" Shaffer, 86, of Heath, longtime teacher and coach at Heath High School, will be held at 11AM Monday, November 5, 2012, at the Heath Church of Christ, 1331 Chapel Way, Heath, with Greg Robbins officiating. Friends and family may call from 2-5PM, on Sunday, at the Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st Street in Newark.
Mr. Shaffer passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at the Inn At Chapel Grove. He was born April 22, 1926, in Ankeytown, Ohio, a son of the late David and Eura (Weller) Shaffer. A veteran of WWII, Mr. Shaffer served in the US Navy. He was a 1950 graduate of The Ohio State University and dedicated his career to teaching and coaching. He had taught in the Old Fort, Bucyrus, Fredericktown School Districts and retired from the Heath City School District. Mr. Shaffer organized the athletic department, was the first Athletic Director and first basketball coach at Heath High School and had taught physical education, health and drivers education. Following his retirement, he had taught driver's education for Walker & Battat. Mr. Shaffer was a charter member of the Heath Church of Christ and enjoyed golfing, fishing and woodworking.
He is survived by his children, Cynthia (Charles) Weaver of Newark, Brenda (Mike) Edgington of California and Keith (Laura) Shaffer of Florida, David (Rhonda) Smith of Zanesville, Steven (Rochelle) Volen-Smith of Newark, Cynthia (Robert) Manchester of Maryland; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister, Jane (John) Wilson of Springfield, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Donna (Beheler) Shaffer; Reva (Pickens) Shaffer; a granddaughter, Betsey Shaffer and a great-grandson, Liam Weaver.
