Arthur "Jerry" and Jeanne (Albyn) Grundies

HENDERSONVILLE, NC: A memorial service for Arthur "Jerry" and Jeanne (Albyn) Grundies, both of Hendersonville, North Carolina, will be held at 10:30 a.m.on Friday, November 23, 2012, at Hanover Cemetery with the Rev. Charlie Smith officiating. Jerry passed away on September 14, 2010 and Jeanne passed away on May 24, 2012.

Jerry was born January 6, 1919 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, to the late Arthur J. and Emma (Salecker) Grundies. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Lester Grundies.

Growing up in Cleveland Heights, he graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1937 where he was active in many sports. Following high school, he graduated from The Ohio State University where he played football as a first string tackle from 1938 thru 1940 under the great coach, Francis Schmidt, the originator of the gold pants tradition vs. arch rival, Michigan. Jerry always embodied the Buckeye spirit, celebrating their victories and suffering their losses. In 1942, he married his wife, Jeanne Albyn of Newark, Ohio, a fellow student at O.S.U.

After college, he served during World War II with the United States Army Infantry Division from 1942 to 1946, stationed in North Africa and Italy, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and other campaign medals. In 2008, he was a proud participant in the HonorAir Flight to Washington, DC, celebrating our World War II veterans.

After the war, he was employed by the Pure Oil Co. as a sales representative for 25 years and for five years with the Union Oil Co. in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to Hendersonville. He was active with Lions Club International for over 50 years, serving as a past-president and as a member of the Hendersonville Lions Club.

Jeanne was born on August 2, 1915 in Newark, Ohio to the late Herbert Arthur and Clara (Deinhardt) Albyn. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Grundies was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett H. Albyn and Robert D. Albyn; and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and George G. Davis.

Jeanne grew up in Vermont and Central Ohio surrounded by the plants and horticulture of the H.A. Albyn Nursery.

A graduate of Newark High School, she went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from The Ohio State University in 1941. She was an Elementary and Junior High Art Teacher in the public schools in Washington Court House and Newark, Ohio, retiring in 1976.

She and her husband were long-time members of First Congregational Church of Hendersonville. She was a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and a 25-year member of the American Iris Society, and was Secretary and then President of the Hendersonville Chapter of that organization, often winning the best of show in her section in the annual Iris Show. Her plants and original art always warmly decorated the homes she made for her loving family.

The Grundies are survived by a daughter, Cynthia Jeanne Grundies of Columbus; a son, Capt. David H. Grundies, USN (Ret) and his wife, Diane Schneider, MD of La Jolla, CA; and three grandchildren, Adele F. Grundies of San Diego, CA, Sara Grundies Weber and her husband, Matt Weber, MD of Huntington Beach, CA, and Scott Grundies of San Diego, CA. Also surviving Mrs. Grundies is her sister-in-law, Anne Mitchell Albyn of Newark; a cousin, Nancy Albyn of Asheville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hanover Cemetery is located in Hanover Township on Rock Haven Road (County Road 275) and can be seen from State Route 16 East just before the State Route 146 exit.
