Martin E. "Gene" Kay

ASHLAND, KY: Martin E. "Gene" Kay, 89, of Ashland, went to be with his Lord on Sunday March 24, 2013 after a short illness. He was born January 17, 1924 in College Corner, Indiana, a son of the late Gordon and Sylvia Pickle Kay who resided in Bloomingdale, IN.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a brother John Kay of Arcanum, OH; and a sister Mary Cawein of Morrillton, Arkansas.

Martin's faith in God and love for life guided his decisions and was a great example to his family and friends. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Ashland and served in many capacities through the years.

Martin retired from CSX Railroad in 1984 where he held the position of signal supervisor and loved model railroading. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps as a radio operator on a B-24 Bomber flying 35 bombing missions out of Italy with the 460th Bombardment Group. He served stateside during the Korean conflict. He shared his strong love of country with many of our young people in the community during Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day programs. Gene had a big heart and loved helping people down on their luck from any walk of life and with great humility.

Martin was an avid sports fan and played basketball and ran track during his high school days. He coached the girls basketball team at Charles Russell for 10 years with much success. He loved to play golf and made 2 hole-in-ones. He was a member of the (Proc Haller) best ball group for many years and even constructed a miniature golf course in his backyard for his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Marjory Kennedy "Bobbye" Kay of Ashland; daughters, Sharon Holman and husband Jim of Newark, OH, Stephane Wilson and husband Ken of Ashland; six grandchildren, Stephanie Tigner, Jimmy Holman and Andrea Holman of Newark, Oh, Scott Wilson of Grand Junction, Co, Sean Wilson and Shannon Daniels of Ashland; 10 great-grandchildren, Sierra Clark, Trey Tigner, Lacey Holman, Halley Holman and Jaxon Holman of Newark, Oh, Kourtney Wilson of Ashland, Trace Wilson, Ben Wilson, Matthew Wilson and Kaley Wilson of Flatwoods, Ky.

Funeral services will be held 2pm Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at the Christ United Methodist Church Pollard Road Ashland by Rev. Michael McAlister. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Tuesday at the Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel and Wednesday from 1-2 at the Church. A brief service and burial will take place 1 pm Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Newark Memorial Gardens in Newark, OH, with full military honors by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
