NEWARK: A memorial service for Dr. Jackie L. Underwood, M.D. age 61, of Newark, was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, at The United Church of Granville, 115 West Broadway, with Rev. Dwight Davidson officiating. Friends called prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. A reception with refreshments followed.
Dr. Underwood passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at her residence. She was born July 13, 1951 in Bellefontaine, Ohio to the late Jack Cory and Ada Maxine (Fullerton) Straub.
Dr. Underwood was a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where she received her Medical Degree. Jackie completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Miami where she majored in Music and was an accomplished Bassoonist. Prior to enrolling in medical school, she attended the University of Cincinnati. She completed an internship and a residency in family practice through the University of Minnesota at North Memorial Medical Center.
Dr. Underwood was board certified in family practice and also in hospice and palliative medicine. She was a member of the Licking Memorial Hospital Active Medical Staff from 1982 to 2006. Jackie also spent one year in Wairoa, New Zealand providing patient care. After returning from New Zealand she rejoined LMH and retired in 2010 and was appointed to the Honorary Section of the Medical Staff. Service to the community was important to her as she served as a Medical Director for Hospice of Central Ohio from 1999 to 2007. Dr. Underwood was named Mental Health Association Physician of the Year in 1995 and Hospice of Central Ohio Physician of the Year in 1999 and 2000.
Jackie was a member of United Church of Granville and a regular participant in the feminist Sunday School Class. She completed two mission trips: a trip with her church to Nicaragua and a medical mission to Haiti with colleagues. She will be remembered as a devoted friend and doctor and a loving mother.
She is survived by her children, Sarah, Susie, and Mitchell Underwood; her siblings, Karen Welch, Lisa Starcher, Christy Straub and Brad Straub, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
