ZANESVILLE: Daniel Matthew Wallace, Sr., 92, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 at his home surrounded by loving family.
Dan was born October 6, 1921 in Zanesville to the late Jesse Boyd and Luella (Williams) Wallace. He was a graduate of Lash High School where he excelled in sports. He earned an athletic scholarship to Wilberforce University where he also served in the R.O.T.C. from 1940 to '41. He married Betty Jean Gibson on December 24, 1947 and together they raised a family including a daughter and three sons. Dan worked at David Davies as a meat smoker for 23 years and then Armco Steel, retiring after 18 years. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty of the home; daughter, Lorraine Diane Portis of CA; three sons, Daniel Matthew Wallace Jr., David Michael Wallace and Donald Marvin (Kelly) Wallace all of Zanesville; grandchildren, Larissa (William) Gray, Dean (Kimberly) Wallace, Daniel (Amber) Wallace; great-grandchildren, William and Taeriq Gray, of San Antonio, TX, Dante, Dustin, Derek, Dominic and Mya Wallace of Zanesville, OH, Daniel, Donivan and Kiah Wallace of Zanesville, OH and a host of nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by siblings, Clarence Wallace, Mary Martin, Robert Wallace, Gertrude Williamson, Josephine Iverson, Mildred Carter and Reuben Wallace and step-son, William Smith.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be Monday, October 28, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Burrell Funeral Services, 414 LaSalle Street. Cremation has been chosen. Rev. Keith Wyatt will officiate.
