NEWARK: A funeral service celebrating the life of Betty J. Smith, age 86, of Newark, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 6, at the Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service with Pastor Matt Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at Hanover Cemetery.
Betty passed away Monday, December 2, 2013 at Arlington Care Center. She was born August 19, 1927 in Logan County, West Virginia to the late Ernest B. and Estella (Browning) McNeely.
Betty was primarily a homemaker caring for her family. She was the oldest living member of the Navy Mothers in the Newark area. Betty was very active member of the Newark Free Will Baptist Church where she was a participant in the Ladies Auxiliary.
Betty is survived by three daughters, Pamela Smith of Heath, Deanna (Roy) Wheeler of Heath and Bea Tompos of Columbus; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Joseph) Copas, Robert Snedden III, Michael (Erica) Snedden, Amber (Frank) LaPoint and James McCarty, Jr.; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Bill (Marian) McNeely, Ginger (Tom) Jeffrey, Ernest B. McNeely Jr., Kay Hall and Charles (Lois) McNeely; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, James Mullins Jr. in 1943 and Chalmer C. Smith in 1996; a son, James A. McCarty in 1988; two infant daughters, Patricia and Anita; two sisters, Helen Wooten and Mary Lou Keaton; and a son-in-law, Bob Tompos.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, at the funeral home, 1249 Hebron Road, Heath where the Navy Mothers will have services at 7:45 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at Ohio State University.
