George Mattis

THORNIVLLE: A funeral service, celebrating the life of George Mattis, 69, of Thornville, will be held on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Thornville home of Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service, with Pastor Jeremy Shank officiating. Burial will follow at Lutheran Reformed Cemetery, with military honors being observed.

George was born in Corning, Ohio on January 16, 1946 to the late Alex and Elizabeth (Toczik) Mattis. He passed away at Zusman Hospice in Columbus.

Prior to retirement, he was a warehouse expeditor for the Boeing Company. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Viet Nam War. He was a member of the Thornport AmVets, Post 51 and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed golfing with his buddies, traveling, working in the yard, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Paula J. (Huston) Mattis, whom he married April 4, 1970; daughter, Rhonda Lynn Harris; granddaughter, Kira Danielle Harris; siblings, Andrew (Helen) Mattis, Mary Ann Wright, Patty (Walter) Thompson and Jim Mattis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings, Helen Jago, Alexander Mattis, Susana Morehart, John R. Mattis, Joseph Mattis, Daney Mattis, Alex Mattis, Jr., Elizabeth Mattis and his twin sister, Julia Mattis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of George to Zusman Hospice, 1151 College Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43209.

Friends may call at the funeral home, 56 S. Main St., Thornville, on Thursday, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

I had the privilege of working with George in Heath. He was a great co-worker and friend. He demonstrated hi toughness completing hard work in a difficult environment and tenderness when speaking of his family. Rest in peace my friend.
