NEW BERN – Peggy B. Cannon, 85, of New Bern, died December 6, 2012, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C., after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
She married Albert E. Cannon (Curley) in a double wedding ceremony with her aunt Emily Phillips and Wilton "Zoot" Saunders on May 14, 1949. Curley died in 1992. Also preceding her were her father, Guy E. Boyd, Sr., her mother, Dallas Phillips Boyd, and her brother, Guy E. Boyd Jr. She is survived by her son, Albert Cannon (Curley) Jr., and wife Vicki P. Cannon of Parkland, Fla., and her daughter, Celia Cannon Best and husband Richard of Cary, N.C.; her sister, Faye Proctor of Raleigh, N.C., five grandchildren, Michelle Frye and husband Mark of Miami, Fla.; Albert E. Cannon III and wife Megan of Canton, Ga.; Chris Cannon and Crystal Van Cleave of Wilmington, N.C.; Michael Best of Cary, N.C.; David Best of Cary, N.C., as well as five great-grandchildren, Noah Frye and Hannah Frye of Miami, Fla.; Wyatt Cannon of Canton, Ga.; Nicholas Cannon and Christian Cannon of Wilmington, N.C.
With the exception of a short time living at Fort Campbell, Ky. with her husband, Peggy lived all her life in New Bern. She graduated from New Bern High in 1944. She excelled at Louisburg College while there for a year and then went to work as a secretary at Cherry Point Marine air station. She later worked at Barbour Boat Works and New Bern Shipyard, and finished her career as a bookkeeper for New Bern City Schools/Craven County Schools.
Peggy was a faithful, loving member of Centenary United Methodist Church in New Bern, N.C. and especially prized her participation as a long-time treasurer of the Sara Kee Sunday school class, the Polly Russell Methodist Women's Circle and the altar guild. Peggy did whatever needed to be done to help at her church, stopping only recently as dementia set in.
She was a proud member of the Eastern Star. After her retirement, Peggy enjoyed being a part of the Golden Age and Elderbear clubs in New Bern and participating in the local Senior Games - she was a whiz at horseshoes!
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 10, 2012, at Centenary United Methodist Church, New Bern, N.C., with the Rev. Susan Pate Greenwood and Rev. Bryan Huffman officiating.
