Pletcher, Steven Richard - River Bend  
RIVER BEND | Steven Richard Pletcher, 70, of River Bend, died at his home Wednesday, May 20, 2015. He was a lieutenant in the United States Navy and a senior executive with several international corporate security agencies. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Cookman Pletcher of River Bend; sons, Timothy Pletcher of Austin, Texas and Mathew Pletcher of Round Lake, Ill.; daughter, Nicole Koretsky of Lake Bluff, Ill.; mother, Marrian Pletcher Coller of Aiken, S.C.; brother, Timothy A. Pletcher of North Augusta, S.C.; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Cotten Funeral Home.

Rasberry, Eric Donovan - New Bern  
NEW BERN | Eric Donovan Rasberry, 46, of 612 S. West Craven Middle School Road, died May 16, 2015, at his home. He was a lifetime resident of the Spring Garden community and was employed as a logger at Billy Morris Logging Company. His funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Rio Grand M.B. Church. Burial will follow in the Rasberry Family Cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Rose Rasberry of the home; four daughters, Tocarra Jones and I'LLyana Davis, both of Vanceboro, Tamrah Savage of Greenville and Erica Rasberry of New Bern; two brothers, Franklin Rasberry and Mickey Rasberry, both of New Bern; two sisters, Mary Rasberry of Durham and Edna Rasberry of New Bern; and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the residence Viewing will be held from 2-7 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015, at the Trinity Memorial Funeral Home Chapel and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are by Trinity Memorial Funeral Home Inc. of Kinston.

Rice, James Allen* - SWANSBORO  
SWANSBORO | James Allen Rice, 81, of Swansboro, died Friday, May 22, 2015 at CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern. Born in Jasper NC on August 17, 1933, he was a son of the late Levie James and Lillie Rae Murphy Rice.  He was a veteran of the US Navy, US Air Force, and retired from Civil Service at Cherry Point. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Anne Morris Rice of the home; a son, Deane Allen Rice and wife Gloria of Emerald Isle; two daughters, Cheryl Anne Rice Watson and husband Larry of Emerald Isle, Susan Carol Rice Moody and husband Tony of Silver Creek; a brother, Mack Rice of New Bern; three sisters, Thelma Foreman of Spring Garden, Lou Alma Russell of Wilmington, Myrtle DeBruhl of New Bern; three grandchildren, Christopher Rice, Brittany Donleycott, Cory Whitlatch; five great-grandchildren; and their beloved dog, Benji.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Lois Wetherington. A memorial service will be 2 pm Tuesday, May 26, 2015 in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home, Swansboro, with Rev. Freddie Braswell officiating.  The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday from 1 pm until 2 pm at the funeral home. Sumner, Hugh Von - NEW BERN  
NEW BERN | Hugh Von Sumner, 85, died Wednesday, May 7, 2015, at Pruitt Healthcare-Trent Campus in New Bern. His funeral service is 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at Foundation Life Fellowship, 2830 Ashland Ave., New Bern. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in New Bern. He was a member of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church serving as an elder, musician and Bible distributor. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was employed at MCAS Cherry Point until retirement. He is survived by his wife, Doris Sumner of the home; three sons, Marcellus Sumner of New Bern, Hecton Loinell Sumner of Dallas, Texas, and Craig M. Sumner of Seattle, Washington; one daughter, Sonia M. Sumner of the home; one brother, Edward Sumner of New Bern; and seven grandchildren. Swindell III, Samuel M.* - Huntersville  
HUNTERSVILLE | Samuel M. "Sammy" Swindell III, 56, died at Huntersville Oaks in Huntersville, NC, on May 9th, after lengthy illnesses. He was a former resident of Alliance and was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church. He was a 1977 graduate of Pamlico County High and attended UNC-Chapel Hill. He was employed as a truck driver for many years. Through his work, Sammy and his wife traveled cross-country where they got to see our great land, meet new people, and reunite with old friends. Sammy loved his family and friends, his church, and Carolina basketball. He loved rock 'n' roll and was always dancing to the beat. The biggest part of Sammy was his heart. Even as his health deteriorated, his light-hearted disposition and caring ways remained. Sammy is predeceased by his wife, Lavonne S. Swindell, his mother, Betty Swindell, and his beloved dog, Wonton. Surviving are his siblings, Danny Swindell (Judy), Lulu S. Rice (Danny), Mike Swindell (Pam), Shane Swindell (Crystal), and Vallie S. Fisher (Jim); his father, Sam Swindell (Cora), his step-daughter, Amber Johnson, his aunt, Nancy C. Potter, his step-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held for Sammy on Sunday, May 31st, at 2 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church on Highway 55 in Alliance with the Rev. Jack Wolk officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Maranatha Baptist Church, P.O. Box 296, Alliance, NC, 28509. NEW BERN | Lillian Marie Smith Valentine, 75, of T-338 Craven Terrace, died Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at her residence. She was formerly employed as a CNA II and was a member of Star of Zion M. B. Church. Her funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Star of Zion M.B. Church, 701 Miller St. Burial will follow at New Bern Memorial Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Moses Valentine of New York; two sons, Van Tyrone Smith of the home and Cedric Valentine of New Bern; one daughter, Jeanette Hamilton-Ellis of Greenville; three sisters, Mary Smith Banks, Ellen Smith and Lillian Smith, all of New Bern; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. NEW BERN | Beulah Mae Whitehead Ward, 90, of 5940 U.S. 70 East, New Bern, died on Monday, May 18, 2015, at her residence. She was a lifetime member of Green Chapel Missionary Baptist Church serving on the Usher Board and in the Senior Choir. She is survived by two sons, Luther Earl Ward and Weldton Jeroy "Boochie" Ward and one daughter, Elnora Whitehead Bullock, all of the Riverdale Community; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive their friends and guests at the residence. Viewing will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 from noon to 6 p.m. at Rivers-Morgan Funeral Home, Inc., 701 West St., New Bern. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 1 p.m. in the Green Chapel M.B. Church, 450 Hickman Hill Road, the Hickman Hill Community, Havelock. Warren, Debbie Grant*  
Debbie Grant Warren, 52 went to be home with the Lord on Thursday May 21, 2015. Debbie was a compassionate youth leader who loved her family and friends, and especially her granddaughter. She will be missed by many. She is preceded in death by her parents Charlie & Opal Grant; two brothers Eugene Grant, and Charlie Grant Jr. She is survived by her husband Edgar Warren of Vanceboro, two daughters Melissa & (husband) Daniel Lee of New Bern, Rachel & (husband) Cameron Hartford of Lawrence, KS; three brothers Ernest Grant, Kenneth Grant, and Willie Grant; five sisters Faye McKown, Wanda Jones, Shirley Todd, Brenda Mixon, and Susie Billings, one granddaughter Parker Lee. Family will receive friends for visitation Tuesday May 26, 2015 at Cotten Funeral Home from 6-8 pm. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday May 27, 2015 at 11:00 am at Cotten Funeral Home.
