NEW BERN - Miss Catherine Cecelia Torrey, 94, passed away Friday, November 23, 2012. A native of Westfield, NJ, Catherine was the daughter of Edna Smalley Torrey and husband John Howard Torrey. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and went on to work at Morgan Stanley Co. In California, she worked for Northrup on the "Black Widow" in the Research and Driver/Flyer division. Catherine served in the U.S. Navy
as a LPN in the U.S. Navy Med Corp at St Albans Naval Hospital, Long Island, NY. After her honorable discharge, she worked for Merck Chemical Company and for Putnam Memorial in Bennington, VT; Rahway Hospital in Rahway, NJ, and was the first LPN in the Cardiac Unit at Craven Regional Medical Center, and retired from CarolinaEast.
Catherine was very active after her retirement in her church where she was a member of the Order of St. Luke and on the Altar Guild. She loved music where she played the violin with ensembles in New Bern and Havelock, and the Greater Community Orchestra. She was instrumental in organizing the Senior Olympic Games in Eastern NC on a local, state, and national level. She medaled in swimming and table tennis. Catherine was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Torrey Ogburn and her niece, Catherine Ogburn Brooks. Miss Catherine is survived by her nieces, Rebecca Torrey Ogburn Rogers of Wake Forest, NC, Jean Marie Ogburn Wilkinson of Ocala, Florida, 7 great nieces and nephews, and 18 great-great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Catherine will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, December 2, 2012 at Christ Episcopal Church with The Rev. Marquita Hutchens officiating.
