Elizabeth Lorraine (Loli) Oates joined the choir in heaven on Thursday February 27, 2014.
She was born in Daytona Beach Florida on June 11, 1966, the daughter of Donna K. Zaytoun and the late B. H. Oates Jr. She is remembered by her mother and stepfather and George Zaytoun, her sister Maria Oates, and brother B. H. Oates III (Trey), and niece Arrianna. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Betty and Earle Kilby; Ruth and B. H. Oates.
She grew up in New Bern, N.C., and moved to Asheville to complete a degree in English from Warren Wilson College. She made a career of music, entertaining audiences from the mountains to the coast. Loli was a self-taught guitar player, listing singer Janis Joplin as one of her biggest influences. Like Joplin, Loli wrote music with strong emotional themes. To quote the Asheville Times "Oates' easy-going manner and big-voice style made her a compelling force on the Asheville music scene."
Loli had a gift for words, vividly expressing her feelings on paper. Loving to draw and spending time in the outdoors, she had a unique love for animals, especially her precious Boxer, Mavis.
Remembering her in life are her special friends Phyllis, Susan and David. An abundance of family will cherish her memory.
There will be a private service with family.
