George Leon Parker

NEW BERN - George Leon Parker, 70, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.

He retired as a heavy equipment operator for the City of New Bern.

His funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. George Royal officiating. Burial will follow in New Bern Memorial Cemetery.

He is survived by four sons, Michael Parker of Stockbridge, Ga. and Troy Leon Downing of Conley, Ga., Simeon Downing IV of New Bern and the Rev. Steven Downing of Colonial Heights, Va.; daughters, Dorothea White, the Rev. Yvonne Downing-Armond, Cynthia Gray, Linda Jordan, all of New Bern and Diane Hatcher of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three sisters, Clementine Wiggins of Powellsville, Mary Harmon of Union and Francis Jackson of Ahoskie; nine brothers, James Parker of Powellsville, Charlie T. Parker of Middletown, Conn., Willie Roy Parker and Randolph Parker of Newport News, Va., Salvester Parker of Aulander, Eugene and Larry Parker of Middletown, Conn., George B. Parker of Atlanta, Ga. and Emmanuel Parker of Conway; 35 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 1707 Green Park Terrace. Viewing hours are Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. followed by visitation of friends at Oscar's Mortuary until 7 p.m.
