Gretchen Charlene Davis

Gretchen Charlene Davis, 69, died on Friday, May 10, 2013. She is survived by two brothers, Samuel (Sam) Dudley Davis of Pollocksville NC; John L. Davis and his wife Judy of Pollocksville; and three nieces, Robin and Rebecca Davis of Pollocksville and Raven Davis Chitalo and husband John of New Bern, NC. She is also survived by one great-niece, Temwanai Rhialgn Chitalo, born on May 9, 2013, as well as several aunts and cousins.

She was born on October 1, 1943, in Horry County, Conway, S.C. to Margaret Minerva Coppage Davis and Charles Leon Davis.

Gretchen loved life and lived it to the fullest. She graduated from Jones Central High School in 1961 and graduated from UNC-Greensboro in 1965 with a degree in Home Economics and Clothing Design. She worked in Perquimans County as a 4-H agent and Washington County as a Home Demonstrator. She taught Home Economics in Nash County after graduating from East Carolina University with a Master's degree in Education and Guidance.

While waiting to enter the U.S. Army, she worked at the Employment Security Commission in Asheboro, NC. After entering the Army, she bravely served her country in various locations throughout the world. She served duties at Fort Benning, GA; Korea; Hawaii; Fort Jackson, SC; Fort Bragg, NC; and Saudi Arabia, including service during the first Gulf War. She completed her Army career as a Major after 20 years of service.

Community service was dear to her heart. She was a member of the NCSU 4-H Foundation, the Craven County Soil and Water Board of Supervisors, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also highly dedicated to Jones County's 4-H Club.

She was a lifelong member of Pollocksville United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, served on many committees, and always served the Lord. She was a quiet witness to everyone she met in strength, perseverance, and dedication.

Gretchen will be forever remembered as a lady of high standards who was always ready to help people without desiring recognition. Education was close to her heart, and she spent many hours volunteering and working with children at Pollocksville Elementary School. She was instrumental in creating family scholarships at UNC-G, NC State, Craven Community College, and the Jones County campus of Lenoir Community College.

She was a farm girl and avid NC State fan who loved the outdoors and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. In recent years she enjoyed traveling all over the world.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 11:30 a.m. prior to a memorial service at 1 p.m. Both will take place at Pollocksville United Methodist Church in Pollocksville, NC. Internment with military honors will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park in New Bern. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Pollocksville United Methodist Church, P.O.
