VANCEBORO - Mrs. Hazel Edwards Nipper Purser, 84, went home to be with her Lord Monday, October 28, 2013. She had been a resident of Bayview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center since 2010.
The funeral will be conducted on Friday at 3 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Vanceboro. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Purser, a native of Craven County, lived most of her life in the Vanceboro community. She was employed as a seamstress for herself at Hazel's Tailor Shop and also at Montgomery Wards, Steinbeck's Men's Shop, and Ann Marie's Bridal Shop, all of New Bern. Later she was employed by Vera's Diner, being affectionately known as "Mama Hazel." She was a member of the West Vanceboro Church of God and attended Juniper Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Greenville Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, where she had served as Chaplain.
Mrs. Purser was preceded in death by three husbands, William Owens, Morris Nipper, and James Edward Purser; a daughter, Phyllis Kay Owens Perry; and two brothers, Dennis Edwards and Donald Edwards, both of Vanceboro.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Owens Nipper and husband, Mitch, of Grantsboro; sons, William "Bill" Owens and wife Mary, Marty Nipper and wife, Debbie, all of Vanceboro, and Ricky Nipper and wife, Wanda, of Grantsboro; one step-daughter, Judy Murray and husband, Tommy, of Arapahoe; three step-sons, Ronnie Purser and wife, Beverly, and Kenny Purser and wife, Francis, both of Greenville, and Roger Purser of New Bern; brother, Glenn Edwards and wife, Bessie, of Vanceboro; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends Friday from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Vanceboro.
