Helen Franks Whitehurst

NEW BERN - Helen Franks "Granny" Whitehurst, beloved Wife, Mom, Sister and Grandmother, passed on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012 to enter the "Gates of Heaven" to be with her loving Lord, to whom she prayed to everyday of her life.

She was born on Dec. 7, 1934 to the late Herman and Dorothy Franks. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Diane Whitehurst. Mom is now celebrating with her daughter, Diane and all of her relatives. "What a glorious day!"

Mom loved all of her grandchildren but she always had a special place in her heart for Bryce Golden and Reese Golden, who she kept. They loved their "Granny" with all of their heart. She also dearly loved her other grandchildren, Wendy, Jennifer and Jeffery.

Mom raised her brother, Herman as a son.

She is survived by her husband, Oscar Ray Whitehurst; daughter, Gayle Bender and husband, Frank; son, Herman and wife, Mary Jean; sisters, Edith Morris and husband, Robert, Louise Sanders and husband, Harold and Joan Tripp; brother, David Franks and wife, Angie; grandchildren, Wendy Long, Jennifer Golden, Jeffery Byrd, Brian Franks, Chad Franks and Courtney McDougal; great-grandchildren, Bryce Golden, Reese Golden, Lela Byrd, Ella Byrd, Matthew Franks, Layla Franks, Molly Franks, Nick Franks, Taylor Franks, Isabella McDougal and Brody McDougal; step-grandchildren, Sophia Byrd and Gwen Rogers.

She had a special love for Bob Long, Billy Golden and Frank Bender. To Mom's dear friends, Brad and Mamie Burdic, Tommy and Helen Thompson, Bob and Debbie Willhoit and everyone that she loved, please know that you were all "special and loved in her heart."

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2012 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, with Dr. Jack Hinton officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the Family Life Center at the church. Burial will be at Greenleaf Memorial Park.

The family wishes to express their love and appreciation to the staff of Hospice, including Shannon, Courtney, Michelle and her "devoted and loved," Tammy.
