VANCEBORO - Mr. Jewel Burton Monette, 65, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014. A native of Jones County, Jewel was a US Army
veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, and was a proud supporter of our Country and the military. He was always at the Memorial Day ceremonies at the New Bern National Cemetery. Jewel enjoyed working with his hands, and he was a carpenter, sawmill operator, and wood smith for most of his life. Jewel was preceded in death by his parents, Albertina Jones Monette and Earl Wayne Monette Sr.; his brothers John David and Earl Wayne Monette Jr.; and his nephew Kevin M. Cuthrell.
Funeral services, with US Army Honors, will be 2 p.m. Monday, January 27, 2014 at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. Jewel is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Hyler Monette; step-son, Lonnie B. Griffin; sisters, Shirley M. Cuthrell and Geraldine M. Williams; brothers, Michael S. Monette and Roger A. Monette, all of New Bern, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
