Luvie James Highsmith

NEW BERN - Mr. Luvie James Highsmith, 80, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 at his home with his family by his side. Luvie was Owner/Operator of Highsmith Plastering Co, until he passed the reigns to his son, Kenny. He was one of New Bern's paid firemen, and used to repair bicycles for the Salvation Army Christmas Drive. After retirement, Luvie enjoyed fishing, building birdhouses, and doing random acts of kindness. He believed in "paying it forward" and giving to his fellow man.

The family will gather for friends and family Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from 6-8 p.m., at the home of Kenny and Teresa. There will be a private graveside service at a later date. Luvie is survived by his wife, Pearlie Mae Highsmith; his children, Sharon H. Cannon, Kenny Highsmith and wife Teresa, and Allen Highsmith, all of New Bern, NC; and his sister, Hilda H. Hill, of Wilmington, NC. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Crystal Temple, Christopher Highsmith, Amy Highsmith, April Adams, Erica Anderson; and his 4 great grandchildren, Andrew, Trent, Sage, and Ash.
