NEW BERN | Morton I. Geller (Mort), died quietly, after a courageous battle against heart disease, on July 7, 2014, at his home in New Bern, North Carolina, with his daughter by his side.
Born in New Jersey, he was the son of Samuel and Sara Geller, and was predeceased by his brother, Joseph. Mort was married to the late Nina Virginia Hildebrandt for 64 years, before her death in 2008. They were predeceased by their daughter, Kathi.
Mort and Jinny lived most of their married life in Rockville Centre, NY, before moving to New Bern, NC.
Mort leaves behind his son, Kenneth (Terri); daughter, Karen (Richard); son, Kris (Jan); and his grandchildren, Kristian, Katie, Kendra (Taylor), Kasey and Zane, Rick (Melissa) and Nicole (John), Sarah (Keith), Laura (Jesse), and Rebecca (Chris); and his great-grandchildren, Kristian Jr. and Jonathan, Samantha and Daniel, Michael, Christopher and Kati. Lois Crandall, was his very special "lady- friend" and his constant companion. Lois remained lovingly by his side through the worst of his days.
Mort served in the US Coast Guard during WWII
, before entering his apprenticeship to become a printer. Mort was an active participant in life. While living in Rockville Centre, he started a village Little League program which was named the Mort Geller League in his honor. Once they moved to New Bern, Mort purchased a sailboat and earned his captain's license, participating in sailing races, volunteered in the local elementary school and in soup kitchens, joined a tennis league, served on various committees in his community of Fairfield Harbor, and later at McCarthy Court, taught vacation Bible School, even made friends with politicians. Everywhere he went people knew him! During the final chapter in his life, he received compassionate care from Home Instead, Craven County Hospice, and his one-of-a-kind friend and physician, Dr. Kenneth Wilkins. Our family is forever grateful.
