NEW BERN, N.C. | Reva Taylor Vernelson, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Reva was born in New Bern on May 3, 1930 to Walter Bernice Taylor and Kathleen Ball Taylor. On June 10, 1951 she married the love of her life, Alex Douglas Vernelson, Jr. She cherished her role as wife and mother, and her true sense of style, strength, and grace will be her legacy. With a generous spirit, she lived and loved well, and considered her family and friends as pure blessings. She loved to host and entertain and frequently had guests in her home. Her ease with organization made all she did seem effortless. Many were touched by her "Card Ministry," which she continued for over 50 years. Reva was a faithful member of Garber United Methodist Church as well as the Garber United Methodist Women (Warrenton Circle). She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Shirley Elizabeth Taylor; brother, Walter Allen Taylor; and brother-in-law, Joseph R. Moore.
She is survived by her only daughter, Alexis Diane (Lexanne) Huffman and her husband, George, of New Bern; her brother, Marshall (Sonny) Taylor and his wife Jacqueline, her sisters, Madie Taylor Moore; Shirley Taylor Pridgen and husband Lonnie; Teresa Ann Taylor, all of New Bern, and Dorothy Taylor Autry and husband, Jerry, of Burgaw. She also leaves behind, to cherish her memory, her grandsons, Alex Thomas Huffman and his fiancé, Holli Marie Faulkner; and Grant Taylor Huffman, all of New Bern; her very special great-granddaughter, Zowie Alexis Huffman; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved roommate and friend, Audrey Faye Huffman.
Her family will forever be grateful to her gifted physicians, Dr. Michael Towarnicky and Dr. Rick Gorman, and their staffs, whose care, love, and compassion made her feel like family, not simply a patient.
The family will receive friends on Monday, June 2, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Ministry Center of Garber United Methodist Church. A celebration of Reva's life will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 2 p.m., at Garber United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David A. Banks and Rev. E. Powell Osteen, Jr., officiating. Internment will immediately follow the service at the Lakeside Chapel at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Stephen Ministry Program or the United Methodist Women-Parlor Fund at Garber United Methodist Church, 4201 Country Club Road, New Bern, NC 28562. Those wishing to offer words of hope and condolences may visit www.pollockbest.com.
