NEW BERN - Richard Francis Walsh III "Dick" passed away at his home at the age of 80 in New Bern on November 30, 2012. Dick was born in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York in 1932, and grew up in Oyster Bay. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. in 1954, where he met and married his wife, Carol Gazin. Upon graduation Dick served during the Korean War
in the United States Navy
as Lieutenant JG aboard the USS SHASTA. He raised his family in Oakdale, Long Island and worked for Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage.
Upon retirement, Dick and Carol fulfilled their dream to live aboard a 42 foot Katy Krogan trawler "Bride of the Waves," where they traveled the Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf and inland waters for 14 beautiful years. Their journey together has become the subject of countless stories of remote beaches, interesting ports of call and wonderful new friendships. Dick inherited his father's love of saltwater fishing and he was never more at peace than attempting to hook a bluefish. He was an avid gardener, bird watcher and had an artistic flair for painting lighthouses and old wooden boats.
He was preceded in death by father and mother Richard and Gladys and sister Barbara. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol; his son, Scott and wife Siobhan and their three children Patrick, Kathleen and Molly of Vienna, Va.; son Rick and wife Meg and their two children, Emily and Susan of Charlotte; daughter Janet of Manchester, Vt.; and nine nieces and nephews.
