Stanley John (Whitey) Humienny Sr. passed away on November 11, 2012, at CarolinaEast Medical Center. He was born on February 26, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York. Whitey joined the U.S. Marine Corp at age 18 and was eventually assigned to Oak Grove Military Base in Jones County. On weekends, he would take the bus into New Bern. In the fall of 1946, he met Mary Elizabeth Gaskins at a USO function. They were married the following year. Earlier this year, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Whitey was an engineer with Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Company for 37 years – retiring in 1984. He was a deacon of First Presbyterian Church and, when his children were young, was involved in the church's youth program and property committee. He loved the beach and spent much of his retirement enjoying his second home at Atlantic Beach.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lib; and three children, Beth Ebert (Jerry) of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, Nell Brummer (Kurt) of Barnegat, New Jersey, and Stas Humienny (Brenda) of New Bern. Also surviving is a grandson, Matthew Ebert of Madison, Wisconsin; a brother, John Humienny (Ethel) of Yardley, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.
Whitey will be remembered as a great dad, a loving husband, and a person who got things done – sometimes with tact and diplomacy – and sometimes not. He cherished his family above all else.
A funeral service will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, November 15, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the Session House. For those who wish to remember Whitey, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, PO Box 1069, New Bern, NC 28563-1069.
