Thomas E. Woody

NEW BERN - Mr. Thomas E. "Ed" Woody, 88, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013. A native of Coeburn, Va., Ed was the son of Aura Belle and James L. Woody. Ed was a proud USMC veteran of WWII, and a star athlete, having been a pitcher with the New Bern Flyers Minor Baseball League. He was sought after by the San Francisco Giants, until the war got in the way. Ed returned to Eastern N.C. while stationed at USMC Station-Cherry Point, where he met his wife of 67 years, Bonnie Minton. Ed was retired from civil service as a Metalsmith Inspector, and loved to golf, becoming a 2-handicap. He was a faithful member of Riverside United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was an usher. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and a sister.

Funeral services will be 11a.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Pollock-Best Chapel with the Rev. Carol Grantham officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at New Bern Memorial Cemetery. Ed is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bonnie Minton Woody, daughter, Patricia W. Bissette, and husband Larry, of Wilson, N.C.; sons, Mike Woody, of New Bern, N.C.; Kenneth Woody and wife Sylvia, of Ferrum, Va.; Jeff Woody, of Diamondhead, Miss.; and his sister, Myrtle W. Adkins, of Cleveland, Ohio. Ed also leaves behind his granddaughter, Jennifer Bray, and husband Chris, of Reelsboro, N.C.; his great granddaughter, Megan; and several nieces and nephews.
