NEW BERN - The Rev Dr. Albert Oliver "Van" Vannorsdall, 75, of New Bern, NC died
Saturday, December 15th, 2012.Memorial services were held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville, NC.
Born in Jeffersonville, Ohio, Van received a B.A. from DePauw University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and a M.D, and PhD from Boston University School of Theology. He pursued post doctoral studies at Harvard University. Van dedicated his career to writing, teaching and helping others. He was a member of the Department of Religion at Ohio Northern University and Nebraska Wesleyan University. He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1980 and served on the chaplaincy staff at Parkland Hospital, Dallas Texas.
In his active retirement, Van moved to Greenville, NC to be close to family. He served the Diocese of East Carolina as a supply priest and was Priest in Charge at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Goldsboro from 2004 through January 2011. He was Priest in Charge at Peace Church,
New Bern from January 2011 to the time of his death.
Van's vision deteriorated in his last year, requiring several surgical procedures. Van feared losing his independence and ability to drive to meetings, read and write. The Vannorsdall family would like to offer sincere gratitude to the parishioners of Peace Church who cared for him in his time of need.
He is survived by his former wife, Jeanne R. Vannorsdall, of Lincoln, Nebraska; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Laura Vannorsdall of Camden, Maine; daughter, Sarah Kimball Vannorsdall of Lincoln, Nebraska; and six grandchildren.
