NEW BERN - Catherine Johnie Boyd Daniels, 93, died April 24, 2012, with her family by her side. Johnie was born May 23, 1918, in Riverdale to William Z. Jr. and Gladys Long Wood Boyd. She was the eldest of six children. Johnie graduated from Brinson Memorial School, the first class ever of that school, and then New Bern High School. She met and later married Harvey James Daniels Sr. on June 24, 1937. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Z. Boyd Jr. and Gladys Long Wood Boyd; her husband, Harvey James Daniels Sr.; one sister, Elizabeth Boyd Hughes; two brothers, William Z. (Zeke) Boyd III and Richard Boyd Sr.
She was an active member of Croatan Presbyterian Church, belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star for over 60 years, and worked a long career from bookkeeping at TA Loving Company at Cherry Point, to secretary and bookkeeper at Brinson Memorial Elementary School, and finally librarian/children's librarian at the Craven-Pamlico-Carteret Regional Library, retiring in her eighties. Her interests included her family and friends, gardening, enjoying her birds, and devoting time daily reading her Bible.
Johnie is survived by her sisters, Hattie Belle Goodwin and Gladys Boyd Lewis; sister-in-law, Helen Mercer Boyd; one daughter, Johnie Breece Daniels Looney and her husband Bob, one son, Harvey James Daniels Jr. (Jimmy), all of New Bern; one granddaughter, Catherine Breece Looney Brooker and her husband Daniel of Raleigh; and one great grandson, Tristan Jacob Brooker, with a great granddaughter to arrive this summer; a step-grandson, Bryan Robert Looney and his wife Mona and their children; a step-granddaughter, Laura Looney Trojan and her husband Joe and their children; as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews, and very close friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 26, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at Pollock~Best Funeral Home, and other times at the family home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at Croatan Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Rich C. Boyd and Rev. Harry Bryan officiating. Interment with Eastern Star Rites will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
