Clemertean J. Bates


NEWBERRY, S.C. - Clemertean J. Bates, 60, of Newberry, S.C., died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at her home.

Born in New Bern, she was the daughter of the late Olan D. Baker and the late Annie Bell R. Baker. She was an active member of Pleasant Grove AME Church, where she served as a Class Leader, a member of the Women Missionary Society, Gospel Choir, Married Couples Ministry and the Lay Organization.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove AME Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are her husband, Stanley S. Bates of the home; step-children, Stella Williams of Newberry, S.C., and Mark Simms of Clinton, S.C.; brother, the Rev. David Burley of Bayboro; sisters, Anne Burley of Bayboro, Frances Kay Monk of Stonewall, Henrietta Taylor of Louisville, Ky., and Lillian Burley of Stonewall; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by sisters, Ruth Miller and Mary Squires.
