RIVER BEND - Donald Reynolds Phillips of River Bend, NC died on April 17, 2013. Don was born on Dec. 20, 1924 to Arthur and Elizabeth Phillips in Richville, NY. The family moved to Potsdam, NY in 1936. In 1942 he graduated from Potsdam High School, where he had participated in many athletic activities.
Don enlisted in the Navy in Dec. 1942 and served as an electricians mate on the USS Donaldson, attached to the Pacific Fleet for 22 months where she collected 7 battle stars. After leaving the Navy in April 1946, he attended Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY and graduated in the Class of 1950.
Don joined the Glens Falls Insurance Co. in 1950. His three and a half years there were the beginning of thirty-six years in the insurance industry. He was Corporation President and majority owner of the H.A. Carey Co. in Ithaca, NY when he retired in December 1986. While in Ithaca, Don was affiliated with the Ithaca Yacht Club, Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary Club, City Club of Ithaca, the Insurance Agents Association and First Congregational Church.
In February 1987, Donald and his wife Patricia moved to New Bern, NC, where he enjoyed many active years as a member of the Harbour Town Raquet Club. Besides his wife, he is survived by daughter Elizabeth Gifford (James), son Thomas (Donna) and daughter Janet; three grandchildren, Jessica Gifford Johnson, Samantha Gifford and David Phillips. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Frances Phillips. He is predeceased by his parents and brother Wendall.
Funeral services will be at a later date with burial in the family plot at Wayside Cemetery, Richville, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to The Destroyer Escort Historical Museum, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201-1926.
