NEW BERN, NC - Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskins Chagaris, 94, passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, November 23, 2013 with her son David, and his family, by her side. Affectionately known be her friends as "Lib", she was born October 10, 1919 in New Bern, NC in the house on the old Trent River Bridge, where her father was the bridge-tender for many years. She was the youngest of three children born to Needham and Maude Dickens Gaskins, Lib attended Brinson Memorial School, New Bern High, and East Carolina Teachers College. After her education, she was employed with McCotter Law Firm and John R. Taylor Insurance Co.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, and former Alderman, Peter Demetre Chagaris, her brother, Roscoe Gaskins, and her sister, Virginia G. Buckley, of Cape Cod, MA.

Lib was a loving and supportive mother to her five children; Anne C. Wilson (Larry), of Sanford, NC; Susan C. Mackey (Bob), of Greensboro, NC; Cmdr. Peter James "Jimmy" Chagaris, USN Ret. (Donna), of Wilmington, NC; LtCol. Robert Leon "Bobby" Chagaris, USAF Ret. (Jonalyn), of Magnolia, DE; and David Demetre Chagaris, Sr. (Maria), of New Bern, NC. She also leaves behind her 12 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

Elizabeth and her husband "Pete" were longtime residents of DeGraffenried, and were owners of Midway Restaurant on Middle Street for 31 years, which later became Baxter's Sporting Goods, where the two of them worked side by side. She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always welcomed friends and family to her home. She will be remembered for open doors of her home, her helping hand, and her famous fried chicken and yeast rolls. In her later life, Lib enjoyed water aerobics, reading, and her unending thoughtfulness with cards, letters, and calls, to her extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be 12:00 PM, Friday, November 29, 2013 at Pollock~Best Chapel, with burial to follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to service time at the funeral home, and other times at the family home. Those wishing to offer words of hope and condolences may visit www.pollockbest.com.
