KINSTON - Lt. Col. Garland H. Hendricks, 91, of Kinston died Monday 8 July 2013 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Lt. Col. Hendricks was born in Washington, Ga. on Nov. 28, 1921, the son of Burl H. Hendricks and Harriett L. Hendricks. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth L. Hendricks, his daughter, Nancy L. Hendricks, and his brother B.H. Hendricks.
Lt. Col. Hendricks was a veteran of World War II as a member of the 486th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force, he was awarded numerous decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross and 5 Air Medals. Discharged in 1945, he joined the reserves and was recalled in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. After serving 26 years in the Air Force, he joined Dixon Marketing, Inc., Kinston, NC in 1968 and worked there for 17 years as Vice President. He was a member of Westminster Methodist Church.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Family will receive friends after the service at the gravesite.
Surviving are his daughter, Judy H. Fersch and husband Kenneth E. Fersch of Apex grandchildren, Kathryn Stough and husband T.J. of Leland, NC and two great-grandchildren, Lily and Addison; two grandchildren, Kacy L. Hunt and Kerrie Beth Fersch, both of Raleigh; step-granddaughters, Stephanie Maloney and husband John of Blacklick, OH and two step-great grandchildren, McKenna and Brogan and step grandchild, Cindy Flaherty and husband Scott of Blacklick, OH; son, Hill J. Hendricks and wife Joyce H. Hendricks of New Bern, grandchildren Cameron and wife Abby of Knightdale, NC and Courtney Hendricks of Raleigh; son, Jeffrey G. Hendricks and wife, Allison J. Hendricks, grandchildren Sydney, Cole, and Jackson Hendricks, all of Ayden.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
