TRENT WOODS - Garland Manuel Ballard, 62, of Trent Woods, N.C., passed away surrounded by family in his home on Wednesday, July 26, 2012. He was a former medical sales representative for A. David Tyre & Associates of Raleigh, N.C., representing Stryker Spine. He was a graduate of New Bern High School, excelling in football, track, and wrestling, and East Carolina University, where he received a B.S. in Industrial Technology.

While at NBHS, Garland was all-conference in football his junior year. His senior year, Garland was co-captain of the football team, was named all-conference, all-east, earned Honorable Mention as an All-American, and played in both the East-West game and Shrine Bowl. He received a full football scholarship to East Carolina University where he was named Most Valuable Freshman. In high school wrestling, Garland was all-conference, all-east, and was the North Carolina state champion in the heavyweight division his senior year. In high school track, Garland threw both discus and shot put, and was listed as one of the top five in the state both junior and senior year. Garland was the first member inducted into the New Bern High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. His athletic ability was far surpassed by his warm heart, witty sense of humor, and generosity to others.

Garland was an active volunteer with Boy Scouts of America, served with the United Way and their Capital Campaign, was a member of the South Carolina Kiwanis Club, and was an active donor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, his favorite charity. Garland was a member of the New Bern Golf and Country Club for 30 years where he enjoyed playing golf on the weekends.

Garland is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Dianne Derda Ballard, and their two children, Garland Andrew Ballard of New Bern, N.C., and Dorsey Ballard Bachenheimer and husband Aaron of Chapel Hill, N.C. Also surviving are his sisters Wanda Ballard Farmer and husband Lee of New London, N.C. and Gloria Ballard Caton and husband Bryan of Seattle, WA. His extended family includes mother-in-law Agnes Derda of New Bern, N.C., sister-in-law Donna Derda Terranova and husband Dominick of Tabernacle, N.J., sister-in-law Gretchen Derda Woosley and husband David of Charlotte, N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Garland was preceded in death by his parents, Garland Ray Ballard and Pauline Dorsey Ballard, and father-in-law Cletus "Red" Derda.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, July 31st at 3 p.m. at Pollock-Best Funeral Home.
