NEW BERN - Henry Shelton Holton, 81, affectionately known as "Papa" entered his Heavenly home January 3, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 1, 1931, at the homeplace in Olylmpia to Hugh and Manilla Dunn Holton.
Shelton retired from the A&P Grocery Store chain after 26 years and was co-founder of the first Piggly Wiggly chain of grocery stores in New Bern. Shelton and his wife, Betty, were owner/operators of Little Hands Day Care for over 40 years where he was also affectionately known as "Papa" to the many children and parents who came into contact with him. Shelton was a life-long member of Broad Creek Christian Church who enjoyed hearing traditional hymns and was a charter member of the Olympia Volunteer Fire Department. Papa was also an avid Tar Heel and New York Yankees fan.
Shelton was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sybil Holton Smith and Margaret Holton Haislip; his grandson, Matthew Tyler Holton; and several nieces and nephews.
Shelton is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Gaskins Holton, and three sons, Dennis and wife Jeannie, Donald and wife Tammy, and Craig and wife Melissa, all of New Bern; seven grandchildren, Amy Holton Spence and husband Corey, Lauren Holton Cowell and husband Chad, Catherine Paige Holton and friend Jeff Decker, Brittany Hannah Holton, Cameron Alan Holton, Luke Alexander Holton, Molly Elizabeth Holton; and great grandson, Colt Douglas Cowell.
A memorial service will be held at Broad Creek Christian Church, 40 Olympia Road, New Bern, NC on Sunday, January 6, 2013, at 3 p.m. with visitation following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Craven County Home Health & Hospice Agency, P. O. Drawer 12610, New Bern, NC 28561.
