POLLOCKSVILLE - Herbert Phillips Jr., 80, lovingly known by his grandchildren and great grandchildren as Poppie, went to be with the Lord Monday, September 16, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his devoted wife, children and grandchildren.

A native of Jones County, Herbert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna Buchberger Phillips. Also surviving are his daughters Dorothy Pittman, Wendy Hardee and Henrietta Cejka and her husband Jim, all of Pollocksville; his grandchildren, Shannon Pike and husband Everett of Kinston; Natasha Burch and husband Charles of Vanceboro; Christine Taylor of Trenton; Amanda Cejka of Newport; Anna Purefoy and husband Arthur of Vanceboro; Phillip Pittman and wife Meghan of Annapolis, Maryland; Zachary Gathings of Pollocksville and Lacie Hardee of Pollocksville; his great grandchildren, Alexis Hill, Blake Hill, Chad Pike, Katelyn Pike, Briley Pittman, Cody Burch, Cala Burch, Zoe Taylor and Amber Taylor ; and sister, Betty Swinson of Pollocksville. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Phillips Sr.; daughter, Patricia Phillips; son, Kenny Phillips; and great-granddaughter, Serenity Faith; brother, Donald Phillips; and sister, Thelma Eubanks.

Herbert was born in Pollocksville on July 19, 1933. During his younger years, he helped his father on their farm, at which time he alone cleared many acres of their farm with only a mule, a chain and an ax. Later, while deployed for the US Army he met his wife, Anna, in Munich, Germany. He loved his family dearly and spending time with them was most important. He worked hard his entire life, not only to provide for his family but working was his passion. He spent most of his time cutting grass and being outdoors. Anyone that knew him, knew him best for his love of John Deere mowers. At any given time, you could find him not only cutting his own grass but others as well. In his free time, he loved camping in the Asheville Mountains with family.

A visitation will be held Wednesday evening, September 18, 2013 from 7–8:30 p.m. at Sayland Funeral Home in Maysville. At other times family and friends are invited to gather at the home of his daughter, Wendy Hardee.
